To help you, we’ve put together 2 Wiki checklists for selling or closing a business from a marketing assets perspective:
Selling a business - Your Marketing Assets:
1. Decide ahead of time what goes with your business, i.e. your Domain names, website and any other marketing assets.
2. Have you created separate domain registration accounts for domains you own personally and those which are related to the business?
3. When transferring the business’s domain(s) to the new account holder, you’ll need to consider the following steps:
4. Logins and passwords will need to be handed over to the new owner, e.g. Google Accounts, Google Maps listing, Google Advertising, Social Media Ad accounts, etc.
5. Are your personal and business emails separate? If not, you’ll probably need to split these before the sale.
6. Who are the key marketing contacts you’ll need to pass on to the buyer? If you’re using a marketing agency, they will tend to manage many of your advertising and digital marketing account credentials.
7. Do you remember who hosts your website? You’ll need to, because details will need to be passed to the buyer and the hosting account transferred to them.
8. If your business sells or features online on other websites or portals, access to those listings will need to be granted to the new owner.Closing down a business - Digital Marketing Tasks:
1. Will you need to update your website to tell visitors that you have closed down; if so, how long will you need to keep this message live?
2. Do you need to contact customers that may be holding gift vouchers, redeemable instruments or agreements and make arrangements with them before you close?
3. Newsflash: Your website and/or domain name may be saleable! Good websites and domain names can be considered assets that may be acquired for use by another business.
4. Decide which domain, hosting and email accounts you’ll need need to retain after the closure. Cancel any hosting accounts not required and obtain any refunds due.
